Father David Swantek to celebrate Mass at St. Martha Church

Father David Swantek celebrated 5 p.m. Mass at the Church of St. Martha on Saturday, January 2, 2010. Father David was one of the Seminarians sponsored by St. Martha Council during his time at the Seminary. He also studied under Father Mike, and interned at the Church of St. Martha.

Father David received a Chalice, engraved with the name of his cousin, S.K. Joseph Lorenc, P.F.N., who passed away recently. Our Lady of Lourdes Assembly presented the Chalice to the Lorenc Family on the night of the Installation of Officers, and the family wants Father David to have something to remember Joe with.

Approximately 50 people attended the Mass and dinner, including Former Master Steve Richardson and his wife, Lady Susan, were in attendance. Joe worked on the District Honor Guard during Steve's term as Master. He was a "Facebook" friend of Lady Susan.

Pt Pleasant Beach families lose possessions in fire

A fire destroyed a building on the corner of Arnold Avenue and Rt 35, Pt. Pleasant Beach,  on Friday August 28, leaving 4 families, totaling 11 people, homelss and without thier possessions. No one was injured but everything was lost.

The Jersey Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross has been aiding these 4 families (family of 6, 2 families of 2, and a single man).  The Red Cross is paying for two of the families to stay in a motel, and the others have chosen to stay temporarily with relatives.  Contact person for the Red Cross is the chapter's disaster-relief coordinator, Robin Porreca, 732-493-9100.

In coordination with St. Gregory's Pantry and Harvey's Closet, the Point Pleasant/Bay Head Ministerium is issuing an appeal for emergency assistance.  They would appreciate help with the following items:

FOOD:
Food donations can be made to St. Gregory's Pantry, located in St. Mary's By-the-Sea Episcopal church, 804 Bay Avenue.  The Pantry's phone number is 732-892-8105, although the phone is usually answered only on weekdays from 10 am-noon, during the Pantry's regular hours; voicemail at other times.

CASH AND GIFT CARDS:
The Pantry will be receiving monetary and gift card donations for these families.  Gift cards are suggested from stores like Target, Wal-Mart and K-Mart, so the families themselves can shop for what they most need. Cash will be distributed by the Pantry in coordination with the Red Cross, as resettlement needs arise.

CLOTHING and SHOES:
Harvey Memorial United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant Boro operates Harvey's Closet, a clothing thrift shop, through which donated clothing can be distributed.  Their address is 1120 Arnold Avenue (phone: 732-892-1660).  Hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 9am-noon; other times by appointment.
There is:
One family of 6
Two families of 2
One single man
(The families are all adults, except for 2 15-year-olds.)
Some of the victims got out with only the clothing they were sleeping in.
There's a need for medium, large and extra-large clothing, both men's and women's.

FOR FURNITURE:
There will be a need for furniture eventually, which St. Gregory's Pantry will try to coordinate.  Because there is no storage space for furniture, supply and demand need to be coordinated closely.  Please, NO DROP-OFF DONATIONS OF FURNITURE; call the Pantry to let them know of pieces that may be available in the future.

Luncheon Honoring Father Gerald Marchand

On Sunday, August 30, 2009, St. Martha Council 7926 hosted an early afternoon party honoring Father Gerald Marchand. The party commemorated Father Marchand's 55 years serving the people of New Jersey as a Priest. Approximately 200 Parishioners came and helped celebrate Father Marchand's 55 years spreading God's word and helping the community.

Father Marchand has a long history with the Knights of Columbus, serving as Chaplain to Bishop Wigger Council in Bellville for many years.

He also served as an advisor to Joseph Luciano, K.H.S., P.S.D., when Joe served the State Council as State Deputy from 1977 to 1979. Together, they began the RSVP Program, in which a local Council donates funds to help a Seminarian during his studies toward becoming a Priest.

Golf Outing

St Martha's Knights of Columbus hosted a Golf Outing to raise funds for various Charitable Organizations based at the Church of St. Martha. The Council raised $14,000, donating $10,000 to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, with the remainder being distributed among Our Lady of Lourdes Assembly, The Holy Name Society, and other groups.

Installation of Officers

The Ceremony of the Installation of Officers was held on Saturday, August 15, 2009. The Installation Ceremony, presided over by District Deputy John A. Gazis, followed 5 p.m. Mass. After the Installation, dinner was served in the All Purpose room. This evening was open to all members, friends and family.

He celebrated his first Mass on Sunday, May 31, at the Church of St Martha, along with 8 Priests and 7 Deacons. Approximately 50 members of Father Tom's family were in attendance at the Mass.
